The cost of renting a motorized wheelchair differs depending on where you are, but it typically ranges from $60 to $110 per day. In the UK, you can rent a power-assisted wheelchair for upwards of £100. You can usually get a discount if you rent one for longer than a day or two.

There are many reasons you might want to rent a wheelchair, whether it’s to increase your comfort, have better mobility indoors, gain experience in using one, or simply to try out a new model.

Renting a motorized wheelchair is a way to find out about a new model at a far more affordable price before you commit to a much larger expense. As cost is always a major thing to think about before you buy a new wheelchair, it’s well worth finding out if wheelchair rental is a viable option for you.

Whether you’re planning a short-term solution or a longer-term solution, understanding the costs of renting is the first step towards taking a trip you’ve long planned to take, or setting out on a new adventure. Later, I’ll explain the difference between a motorized wheelchair and a power chair. First, though, let’s investigate the price of motorized wheelchairs and discuss the costs of renting ones in the US.

What are the prices of motorized wheelchairs?

Prices of motorized wheelchairs can vary depending on things like the brand, model, and features. However, here are some rough price ranges for motorized wheelchairs to give you something to go on.

  • Basic models – Basic wheelchairs can start at around $1,000 to $2,000. These models often boast limited features and are not as customizable as some more expensive models.
  • Mid-range models – Mid-range wheelchairs with more features, increased comfort, and more customization options can cost anywhere from $2,000 to $5,000.
  • High-end models – High-end wheelchairs with advanced features, high-quality materials, and multiple customization options can range from $5,000 to over $15,000.
  • Specialty Wheelchairs – Specialty or customized wheelchairs designed for specific needs or to help you do specific activities or sports can cost upwards of $10,000.

If you need any add-ons or accessories the cost for those will vary depending on which you choose. You could choose special seating options, or advanced control systems, for example.

Sometimes, if a motorized wheelchair is deemed medically necessary for you, Medicare or your health insurance provider may cover all or part of the cost.

Along with the upfront cost of a wheelchair, you must also consider ongoing maintenance and repair costs before you buy a motorized wheelchair. That is just one of the reasons renting one might be a better option for you.

The cost of renting a motorized chair can differ greatly based on the company you choose, the model of the chair, the extra services you need, and how long you’re renting it for.

Renting a standard powerchair for a day will cost anywhere from $60 to $110. If you rent the chair for longer, it will be substantially cheaper.

The cost of a 3-day rental, for example, can be about $35 per day, whilst the rate for a 2-week rental could work out at less than $20 a day.

If you need a more advanced powerchair, rentals usually cost more than $90 per day. For 3 days, the cost is approximately $45 per day. For a fortnight, it would be about $20 per day.

Now it’s time to talk about the difference between power chairs, motorized wheelchairs, and electric wheelchairs.

What is the difference between a power wheelchair, a motorized wheelchair, and an electric wheelchair?

Here are some key points to consider:

  • Power wheelchair – This term is commonly used in the US to refer to electric wheelchairs. Power wheelchairs are typically controlled by a joystick or other electronic control system and are designed for people who have limited or no ability to self-propel a manual wheelchair.
  • Motorized Wheelchair – The term “motorized wheelchair” might be used instead of “power wheelchair” to describe the same type of wheelchair. The term “motorized” simply means the wheelchair is equipped with an electric motor for propulsion rather than being propelled manually.

Regardless of the terms used, these wheelchairs typically share common features, including an electric motor, rechargeable batteries, and electronic controls. They make it possible for physically disabled people to have greater independence.

Next, let’s find out how much motorized wheelchairs and rentals cost in the UK.

How much is a motorized wheelchair in the UK?

Motorized wheelchair prices in the UK can vary widely according to brand, model, features, and customization options, just as with the same type of wheelchair in the US.

Typically, the price ranges for different models of chairs in the UK are comparable with the prices in the US, with lower-end models costing up to £2000, and higher-end and specialized models potentially setting you back by more than £10,000.

The NHS or personal health insurance may cover part or even the full cost of your wheelchair, and they are much more likely to do so if the chair is medically necessary.

What is the cost of hiring a motorized wheelchair in the UK?

The cost of hiring a motorized wheelchair in the UK can vary depending on how long you wish to rent one for, where you are, and the type of wheelchair you want.  Wheelchairs that boast more features will cost more.

  • Short-term rentals – Short-term rentals, for a day or a week, say, can cost from £20 to £50 per day or around £100 to £250 per week.
  • Longterm rentals – Should you need to rent a power chair for more than a month, you might find prices for monthly rentals range from £150 up to £500. In some cases, it may cost even more, depending on the wheelchair’s specifications.

If you need a specialized wheelchair, the costs can vary greatly.  Some providers may offer delivery, pick-up, and maintenance services, but may charge extra. The same is true for insurance. Some providers may also ask that you put down a refundable deposit in addition to the rental fee.

Next, let’s turn to the question of whether you can get grants to help you out in both the US and the UK.

Can I get a government grant for a mobility scooter in the US or UK?

In both the US and the UK, there are government programs and financial assistance options that may help disabled people get mobility scooters or similar aids. However, the availability and eligibility criteria can vary significantly between the two countries.

US

In the US, government grants specifically for mobility scooters aren’t common. Still, there are still ways you can get help with covering the cost of a wheelchair or mobility scooter.

Here are the main ones.

Medicare – If you’re eligible for Medicare, it may cover a mobility scooter or power wheelchair under certain conditions. Your chair or scooter must be considered medically necessary, and your healthcare provider must prescribe it.

Medicaid – Medicaid is a state and federal program that provides health coverage for eligible low-income people. Medicaid may cover the cost of a mobility scooter if it’s thought to be medically necessary and if you are eligible according to Medicaid’s criteria.

Veterans’ benefits – Veterans with service-related disabilities may qualify for mobility assistance through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).

Local programs – Some states or local organizations may offer help or grants to disabled people who need equipment to help them stay mobile, though does depend on where in the US you live.

Charities – Certain charities may give financial assistance or discounted mobility scooters to individuals in need.

UK

In the UK, things are quite different, and government assistance is more structured.

Here are the chief ways you can get help in the UK.

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) – PIP is a benefit provided by the UK government to help disabled people cover the extra costs associated with their disability. PIP includes a Mobility Component, and if you qualify for this component, you may use it to lease a mobility scooter or a powered wheelchair through the Motability Scheme.

Motability Scheme -The Motability Scheme allows those who get certain government benefits, including PIP, to exchange their mobility allowance for the lease of a mobility scooter or powered wheelchair. The scheme allows you to choose from a wide range of vehicles and equipment.

Local authority grants – Some local authorities in the UK may offer grants or assistance programs to help disabled people buy mobility aids, including mobility scooters or powered wheelchairs. Eligibility criteria and available funding can vary by region.

It’s crucial to research the available options, eligibility criteria, and application processes in your specific area or country. Eligibility for these programs often depends on factors such as your disability, income, and residency status. You can seek advice from local government agencies, healthcare professionals, or organizations specializing in disability support to help you find the right sort of help. You can also appeal to independent charities for help with funding.

Summary: How much does it cost to rent a motorized wheelchair?

Today, I delved into the question “How much does it cost to rent a motorized wheelchair?” The cost of renting a motorized wheelchair varies depending on several factors, as I’ve pointed out.  Generally, renting a power chair is more affordable than buying one outright, but the costs can still be considerable. Still, to me, the improved mobility and greater freedom a motorized wheelchair can bring you to make the costs worthwhile.

Whatever adventure you’re embarking upon, remember to explore all the options open to you. Who knows? Maybe renting a wheelchair is just the thing for you.
